6 tips to maximize space in small interiors

Updated: Jul 11, 2024

In Geneva and its surroundings, it can sometimes be challenging to find properties that meet our space requirements. Whether you live in a city apartment or a rather compact house, space optimization is essential to create a functional, aesthetic environment that exudes joy. In this article, I'll share some practical tips for making the most of small spaces and creating welcoming interiors that feel more spacious than they appear.

1. Prioritize custom or semi-custom multifunctional furniture

In small interiors, every centimeter counts. Opt for multifunctional furniture that can serve multiple purposes to maximize the use of available space. For example, choose a sofa bed to accommodate overnight guests, coffee tables with integrated storage space, or wall shelves that can also serve as a desk.

2. Use light colors, but not only!

It's a well-known concept that light and neutral colors, such as whites and beiges, can visually enlarge a small space by reflecting natural light and creating a sense of openness. Generally, opt for a soft and consistent color palette throughout the interior for a harmonious and soothing effect. That being said, a small space doesn't necessarily have be boring! I would also advise integrating a dash of warm colors that appeal to you. Currently, sage green, mustard yellow, or terracotta are trending. 3. Maximize vertical storage

In small interiors, it's important to use vertical space as efficiently as possible. Install wall shelves to store books, decorative objects, or plants, and use tall cabinets to maximize storage while freeing up floor space.

4. Choose appropriately sized furniture

When choosing furniture for a small interior, opt for appropriately sized pieces that don't dominate the space. Avoid bulky and cumbersome furniture that can make a room feel cramped, and instead opt for light and airy pieces that allow energy to flow. 5. Define your functional zones

In a small interior, it's important to define clear functional zones to optimize space usage and not feel overwhelmed. Use rugs, paint, and lighting to visually delineate different areas, such as the living room, dining area and workspace, even in an open space.

6. Incorporate mirrors to create a sense of space, but be careful!

Mirrors can be powerful allies for maximizing space in small interiors by creating an illusion of openness and depth, but if placed incorrectly, they can also double the clutter volume in a room. So, place your mirrors strategically to reflect natural light and visually enlarge the space. Avoid placing them directly opposite the entrance door, areas that can be easily cluttered, or directly facing the bed, which is not very Feng Shui.

By following these simple yet effective tips, you can maximize space in small interiors and create functional, comfortable and aesthetic living spaces.
